Alfonzo Duncan enters his second season (and third year) at the helm of the UVI. In the covid-shortened 2021-22 season, Duncan and UVI (equipped with a roster of eight freshmen) finished with an overall record of 2-9.
The University of the Virgin Islands named Duncan as the head men’s basketball coach in November 2020. With winter sports canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021-22 campaign represented Duncan’s first season courtside with the Buccaneers.
Duncan brings over 30 years of success in coaching and athletic administration to UVI, including at the NCAA Division I and Division II levels.
“Coach Duncan has an incredible track record spanning over 30 years, matched by his ability to recruit and build championship-caliber basketball programs of integrity and character,” said Athletic Director Dr. Jerel Drew. “He brings a new level of energy and passion that will contribute to the success of our men’s basketball program on the court, in the classroom, and the community.”
Duncan arrives at UVI after serving as the Director of Athletics and Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Clinton College, a fellow HBCU, in 2019-20. That season, Duncan led the Golden Bears to the conference tournament finals.
Prior to Clinton College, Duncan spent six years at Division II HBCU Livingstone College, where he was the Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance and Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach. In his time with the Blue Bears, he helped guide them to consecutive CIAA Conference Championships from 2013 to 2015. In the 2016 season, Livingstone advanced to the CIAA Championships for a third straight time. In his role in compliance, Duncan certified the eligibility of over 250 student-athletes, following NCAA guidelines.
From 2006 to 2010, Duncan was the Head Boy’s Varsity Coach at Charlotte Country Day, where he helped transform the program into a top team in the conference, which included a conference championship and a school-record 20 wins in a single season.
Duncan was hired by Division I Virginia Tech in 2000 as an assistant men’s coach, a role he served in until 2002. The 2001-2002 squad held the distinction of being the highest Team GPA in school history. While coaching at Virginia Tech, Duncan received his Master of Science degree in Business Education Technology.
From 1996 to 1999, Duncan was the Associate Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Division I Florida Atlantic University. In the 1998-99 campaign, Florida Atlantic defeated the 11th-ranked team in the country, Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Oklahoma. On February 23 of that same season, Duncan was named the interim head coach at FAU.
Prior to coaching at Florida Atlantic, Duncan had been an assistant men’s basketball coach at North Carolina A&T from 1993 to 1996. During his time there, the Aggies won consecutive MEAC Championships en route to NCAA Tournament appearances. At NC A&T, Duncan earned his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and his Master of Arts in Educational Leadership.
Duncan has also spent time at Oakridge Military Academy, Fork Union Military Academy, and St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy, where, among other roles, he was a head varsity coach.
Duncan began his coaching career as the Head Junior Varsity Coach and Assistant Varsity Coach in men’s basketball at his high school alma mater of R.J. Reynolds High School. In his time there, R.J. Reynolds won three straight North Carolina High School Athletic Association Championships.
Duncan is from Winston-Salem, N.C. and he has three kids, SteFon Wright-Duncan, Alfonzo Wright-Duncan Jr., and Salar Wright-Duncan with his wife Stephonia Wright-Duncan.
