Mission Statement

INTRODUCTION

Dear Buccaneers,

On behalf of the University of the Virgin Islands' Athletics Department, we welcome you to the University of the Virgin Islands. We are proud that you have chosen or may be considering UVI to pursue your educational and intercollegiate opportunities. Here at UVI, we are dedicated to the well-being of our student-athletes by maintaining active intercollegiate sports programs. We emphasize student development and leadership through sports competition, physical fitness, and the development of recreational skills that enrich life after leaving the University. 

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT'S MISSION

It is our belief in the Athletic Department that student-athletes should not only progress athletically but more importantly, academically and socially through the realm of competition. All Buccaneers are held to the athletic code and to their academic requirements that promote all-around development. Recognizing the importance of academic success, our staff provides academic support to ensure that our students progress during their time here at the university. Our staff, which consists of coaches and administrators, are here for you. We wish you the best in all your collegiate endeavors.

ACADEMIC STANDARDS

The priority of the student-athlete should be to successfully complete an undergraduate degree at the University of the Virgin Islands. As such, intercollegiate athletics is intended to enhance the accomplishment of this goal by providing opportunities for personal growth and development outside of the classroom. Coaches are responsible for monitoring their athlete’s progress in the classroom; however, it is ultimately the student athlete’s responsibility to hold academics as a high priority. 

ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

Student-athletes are always expected to perform with admirable attitude and effort, keeping in mind the 5 core values of the NAIA—respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership, and sportsmanship.
