UVI History
ACADEMICS
Location: The University of the Virgin Islands has two campuses — St. Thomas and St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Enrollment: UVI has a combined enrollment of approximately 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students.
Founded: The University of the Virgin Islands was chartered on March 16, 1962 as the College of the Virgin Islands — a publically funded, coeducational, liberal arts institution. In 1972, the College of the Virgin Islands was awarded Land-Grant status by the U.S. Congress. In 1986, the College of the Virgin Islands was renamed to the University of the Virgin Islands and was officially recognized as a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) by the U.S. Congress.
Type of School: UVI is a public liberal arts-based Masters II university, a Historically Black College and University, and a Land-Grant institution. It holds the distinction of being the only HBCU in the Caribbean. UVI offers 32 Bachelor Programs, 11 Graduate Programs, and 6 Associate Programs.
ATHLETICS
Affiliation: National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA); UVI joined the NAIA in 2016-17 after being a member of the Inter-university Athletic League. Entering the 2024-25 season, the Buccaneers will begin their 18th season of athletic competition. As the only Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in the Caribbean.
Conference: Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC)
Nickname: Buccaneers
