UVI Basketball Teams Predicted to Finish 10th in GCAC, Shaw-Clarke, Langston Earn Preseason Honors

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands, October 20, 2023 – University of the Virgin Islands men's basketball players Naythan Shaw-Clarke and Jalil Langston were voted to the All-GCAC Preseason First and Second teams, respectively, while the men's team is expected to finish 10th in the conference as voted by the GCAC Rating Committee released on Thursday.

Buccaneers team captain Shaw-Clarke suited up in 16 of 20 games last season, averaging 21.4 points per game, 7.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.9 steals per game. "I am not surprised by his selection, he is very deserving of this," said head coach Shannon Taylor. The senior guard also shot 48.3% from the field, delivering 11 20-plus point performances for the Buccaneers.

Junior guard Jalil Langston, the Bucs' second leading scorer, averaged 17.3 points per game, and shot 45.1% from the field and grabbed 4.7 rebounds per game. Langston started 17 of 18 games for the Buccaneers last season.

Both the men's and women's basketball teams are predicted to finish 10th in the GCAC. "It's understandable being the newest teams in the conference. It's going to be tough, but we are going to compete," said Taylor. The Buccaneers open the season at home on November 10 and see their first conference action on December 9 at Southern University New Orleans (SUNO).
