Phillips Explodes for 33 points in Bucs’ Loss to Talladega

Talladega, Alabama, January 6, 2025 – University of the Virgin Islands junior guard Amayoa'ah Phillips exploded for 33 points in a 85-69 loss to conference rival Talladega College at the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center during the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUAC) Crossover. This match marked Phillips's highest scoring output this season and he has scored in double digits in nine of his 10 contests this year.

The Buccaneers (4-6, 3-4 HBCUAC) found themselves behind early on the scoreboard as they trailed at halftime 42-27. After the break, Phillips would ignite the offense with 20 second-half points, helping UVI cut into the deficit. He scored 16 of his team's first 23 points coming out of halftime, keeping them in the game. Although the Buccaneers narrowed the gap to just 11 points after trailing by as many as 21, they ultimately fell short as Talladega College held on for the win.

Senior guard Jalil Langston also contributed with 10 points, five rebounds, and two assists, while senior forward Nico Thomas led the team defensively with three steals. Despite the loss, the Buccaneers showed determination and fought until the end.

The Buccaneers' biggest challenge was containing the Talladega offense, as their opponents shot an impressive 61.2% from the field and 40% from beyond the arc. The Tornadoes' offensive strategy primarily targeted the paint, resulting in 48 points scored in the interior.

"We were physically outmatched," said interim head coach Kevin Sheppard. "They had a big size advantage and were able to use that against us. They dominated us in the paint. However, we still had a chance as we were able to get the game within striking distance. We have another tough matchup coming up with SUNO, a very good team that also has a big forward who may cause problems for us. But we are up for the challenge and look forward to the advantage of playing on our home floor."

The Buccaneers will aim to rebound when they return to ST. Thomas for their first home game of the regular season, taking on Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) at the Elridge Blake Sports and Fitness Center on January 11 at 3 p.m. AST.
