Phillips Secures HBCU Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week

St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, January 27, 2025 – University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) men's basketball student-athlete Amayoa'ah Phillips was honored with the Historically Black College and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) Offensive Player of the Week award for the Week of January 20-26.

The award honors the top offensive player in the HBCUAC during that period and Phillips was selected as the recipient by the conference voting committee on Monday morning. The statistics considered for this award are based on the players' performance in the previous week of competition.

This marks Phillips' first Offensive Player of the Week award, but it is his third in-season weekly conference recognition for his outstanding performance. Previously, the 6-foot-1 guard was honored twice as the HBCUAC's Newcomer of the Week from December 16-22, 2024, and January 6-12, 2025.

Phillips joins Southern University at New Orleans forward Jamal Gibson, who was named Defensive Player of the Week, Doyel Cockrill III of Fisk University, who was recognized as Newcomer of the Week, and Talladega's Jordan Brewer, this week's Freshman of the Week, as student-athletes who received conference honors.

In three games last week, Phillips averaged an impressive 23.3 points per game, including a 32-point performance in a win against Kuyper College, just one point shy of his season high. In a conference matchup versus Tougaloo, the junior guard scored 21 points in one half of play after checking into the game for the first time to begin the second half of the contest. Additionally, Phillips shot a proficient 91.3% from the free-throw line after sinking 21-of-23 attempts during this stretch of games.

The reigning Offensive Player of the Week currently ranks as the second-leading scorer in the conference, averaging 20.9 points per game. Phillips has made a name for himself and established himself as one of the top scorers in the HBCUAC.
