
Ashukamayah Phillips Wins GCAC Newcomer of the Week Award
St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, February 19, 2024 – University of the Virgin Islands(UVI) Freshman guard Ashukamayah Phillips earned the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Week title. This award is only available to freshmen and transfer students who are new to the conference. Phillips was selected out of a pool of nominees as the winner of this award by the conference voting committee on Monday afternoon.
The reigning newcomer of the week scored a career-high 31 points against Tougaloo College in a dominant win during the conference matchup. Phillips shot 11-22 from the field and 7-of-13 from three-point territory.
The 5-foot-7 guard has started all 19 of UVI's games this year and leads the lady Buccaneers offensively scoring 13.6 points per game making her the 4th leading scorer in the conference. She also averages 4.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.
Phillips is just the second UVI player to win the Newcomer of the Week award after junior guard Jordan Carter secured it earlier this season.
