Eight UVI Student-Athletes Named to GCAC Commissioners Honor Roll

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, June 27, 2024 – Eight University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) Buccaneer student-athletes were named to the 2023-2024 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) Commissioner's Honor Roll. The list consists of over 400 collegiate athletes representing each of the 10 member institutions in the GCAC.

"I am exceptionally proud of our student-athletes for receiving such a prestigious academic honor from the GCAC," said UVI director of athletics Dr. Karen Carty. "Being named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll shows that these Buccaneers not only put in time excelling at their respective sports, but also prioritized their academics to succeed in the classroom as well."

The GCAC Commissioner's Honor Roll awards are available to any athlete who has a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or above and who has competed for their respective institution during the academic school year. The GPA requirement applies only to the semester in which the student-athlete competed in their sport.

During the fall sports season, senior cross country runners William Steger, and Shirmoy O'Garro were the first two Buccaneer student-athletes to qualify for this academic honor.

Steger and O'Garro doubled down as dual sport athletes as they qualified yet again during the winter sports season as they competed for the Buccaneer men's basketball team. Graduate student Maurice Smith, Jr. and junior Denny Gonzalez joined their teammates as student-athletes on the men's basketball team and fulfilled the honor roll requirements.

The women's basketball team boasted three student-athletes on the conference honor roll List. Juniors Kashay Bass and Mia Davis, along with Graduate Student Brea Patterson all have a 3.0 or better GPA.

Rayhan Sabur was the lone qualifier for the spring sports season as he competed in men's track and field for the Buccaneers.
