Huge Games From Bigs Lead to First Win

WILBERFORCE, Ohio   Big men LiWayne Richardson and Will Boyd turned in gargantuan efforts to lift the University of the Virgin Islands Men's Basketball team to its first win of the season with an 84-71 victory over host Wilberforce University in Continental Athletic Conference action Thursday evening.

With the game tied at 23, the Buccaneers went on a game-altering 24-2 run en route to a 53-28 halftime lead. Three quick treys from Jamal Norris defined the run. As a team, UVI shot 18-of-32 (56.3 percent) in the first half. The 84 total points are a season-high for the Buccaneers. The 31 total field goals and the 51.7 shooting percentage from the field are also season-highs.

Richardson delivered with season-high totals of 20 points (8-of-10 from the field), 17 rebounds, and four blocks. Boyd had 21 offensive boards, along with 12 points. The two helped the Buccaneers to a 61-31 edge in rebounding, which is a season-high.

GAME NOTES

  • Norris caught fire early with the three quick bombs from deep and Jamari Williams added a couple of jumpers during the run. When UVI missed, Boyd and Richardson dominated the offensive boards for easy putbacks. Boyd had seven offensive boards and Richardson had eight.

  • Jamal Norris finished second on the team with 16 points on 5-of-13 shooting.

  • Jamari Williams finished with 10 points and four rebounds. Denny Gonzalez added 10 points, as well.

  • Chris Williams and Jaren Johnson each had six points while Eliyah Stevens grabbed seven boards as a reserve for the Buccaneers.

  • Wilberforce was able to claw into the large UVI lead with their three-point shooting in the second half. The Bulldogs shot 10-of-25 (40 percent) from deep in the final 20 minutes after going 4-of-15 (27 percent) in the first period.

  • November 19, the Buccaneers and the Bulldogs will return to Gaston Lewis Gymnasium for the third and final matchup between the two programs this season. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
