Lady Buccaneers Open Season at St. Thomas University in South Florida

Lady Buccaneers Open Season at St. Thomas University in South Florida

St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, November 27, 2024 – The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) women's basketball team is preparing for a challenging two-game road trip to South Florida. The Lady Buccaneers are set to take on St. Thomas University at the Fernandez Family Center in Miami Gardens, Florida on November 29th and 30th.

After a tough loss in their recent exhibition game against the Virgin Islands Senior Women's National Team, UVI is determined to demonstrate its true potential with a strong performance on an equal playing field.

"We've had plenty of time off since our last game, so the team is eager to return to the competition," said head coach Stephanie Cooper. "We'll be without a few key players on this road trip but that's where others will have to step up and fill those roles for us. This team has the opportunity to be special and with our captains Ashukamay'ah Phillips and Lameez Khan leading the way, we'll be able to accomplish our goals for this season."

The first game of the road trip will feature the Lady Buccaneers facing off against the St. Thomas University Women's Basketball Development team (0-0) on November 29 at 2 p.m. This exhibition game will be UVI's final opportunity to fine-tune their skills before their season opener. The following day, UVI will conclude its back-to-back road trip with a game against St. Thomas University's women's varsity team (4-1) at 4 p.m. This game marks the Lady Buccaneers' first official game of the season as they aim to start strong. In their last meeting in 2022, the Lady Buccaneers fell to the Lady Bobcats 75-53.

Both games will be streamed live via the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Sun Conference's "Sun Digital Network" on the St. Thomas University channel. For more information, please visit www.UviAthletics.com.
