Bass Earns First HBCUAC Defensive player of the Week for the Lady Buccaneer

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands, February 25, 2025 – University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) Women's basketball student-athlete Kashay Bass was honored with the Historically Black College and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) Defensive Player of the Week award for the Week of February 17-23.This marks first time a Lady Buccaneer has received the award.

The award honors the top defensive player in the HBCUAC during that period and Bass was selected as the recipient by the conference voting committee on Monday morning. The statistics considered for this award are based on the players' performance in the previous week of competition.

Bass, a forward for UVI, delivered an outstanding performance that earned her the title in the final week of the regular season. In a single game last week, Bass achieved a career-high of 20 rebounds, four steals, and a block, showcasing her exceptional defensive skills. Her defensive prowess played a crucial role in the Lady Buccaneers securing their first win of the season against Wiley University.

The Atlanta, Georgia native joins her teammate Maliah LaCour, who was named Offensive Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week, as well as Saniya Keys from Oakwood University, who was recognized as Freshman of the Week, in receiving conference honors.

The 5-foot-11 senior Bass, who is also a hopeful for the All-HBCUAC Defensive Team, has excelled defensively throughout the season. She ranked in the top 12 in both steals and blocks in the HBCUAC, finishing tied for sixth in blocks per game with an average of 1.3 and 11th in steals per game with an average of 2.1. Bass' season-high in steals came against Philander Smith University and Wiley University, where she recorded five steals in each game. Her season-high in blocks was achieved in a three-block performance against Philander Smith University
