Lady Bucs Gearing Up for Second Leg of HBCUAC Crossover
ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands, January 1, 2025 – The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) women's basketball team is gearing up to travel to Alabama to participate in the second leg of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) Crossover from January 3-7. This unique "pod play" format will showcase all 13 HBCUAC teams competing in cross-divisional play at two sites: Birthright Alumni Hall on the Campus of Stillman College and Talladega College's Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center.
UVI (0-5, 0-4 HBCUAC) will be making its return to the court after their recent loss to Rust College on December 17. The team is set to face a challenging schedule, with three games scheduled over a span of four days.
The Lady Buccaneers' first test will be against Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The Lady Tigers, boasting a record of 11-3 overall and 6-0 in HBCUAC, currently lead the conference. Despite the tough matchup, the Lady Buccaneers are determined to upset the Lady Tigers and hand them their first conference loss.
In the second game of their road trip, the Lady Buccaneers will take on Oakwood University, seeking redemption after suffering defeats in both matchups last season. Oakwood, with a record of 3-9 overall and 1-5 in HBCUAC play, will provide a familiar challenge for the Lady Buccaneers. The game will be held at the neutral site of the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center.
To conclude their road swing, the Lady Buccaneers will face Talladega College, the host of the second pod at the Crossover event. Although the two teams were expected to meet twice during the 2023-2024 season, neither game was played due to scheduling conflicts.
