
LaCour Secures Two HBCUAC Weekly Awards
ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands, February 25, 2025 – Senior guard Maliah LaCour of the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) Lady Buccaneers basketball team has recently been recognized for her outstanding performance on the court. LaCour has been honored with two Historically Black College and Universities Athletic Conference Weekly awards, specifically the Offensive Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week awards.
The Offensive Player of the Week Award is presented to the top offensive player based on statistics from the previous week of competition. On the other hand, the Newcomer of the Week award is designated for the top performer who is new to the conference and has transferred into an HBCUAC member institution. LaCour was chosen as the recipient of both awards by the conference voting committee on Monday morning.
In a remarkable game last week, LaCour achieved a season-high of 27 points and 12 rebounds, resulting in a double-double effort that led her team to a 67-60 victory over Wiley University on her Senior Night. Her impressive performance included a 16-point second half that helped her team overcome a first-half deficit for their first victory of the season. Standing at 5-foot-8, LaCour shot 9-for-15 from the field, 1-for-1 from three-point territory, and 8-of-11 from the free-throw line.
The Dallas, Texas native, LaCour maintains an average of 10.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, ranking 6th in the conference in free-throw percentage with an impressive 73.5% from the line. Additionally, LaCour delivered three 20-plus point performances and two double-doubles for the season for the Lady Buccaneers.
In addition to LaCour's achievements, her teammate Kashay Bass was named Defensive Player of the Week, and Saniya Keys of Oakwood University was recognized as Freshman of the Week, for the week of February 17-23.
