UVI Basketball Teams Visit Virgin Islands Public Schools

St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, January 14, 2025 – The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) men's and women's basketball teams, along with their coaching staff, embarked on a community outreach initiative by visiting four schools on St. Thomas last Friday. The student-athletes engaged with students at Ulla F. Muller Elementary, Jane E. Tuitt Elementary, Joseph Sibilly Elementary, and Edith Williams Alternative Academy during their campus visits.

Women's head coach Stephanie Cooper expressed her enthusiasm for the outreach event, stating, "It was truly heartwarming to witness the smiles and joy on the children's faces when our teams arrived. It was a valuable reminder for our female athletes that they serve as role models. These moments of reflection help us realign with our life's purpose. Each of our student-athletes has a unique story, and the opportunity to compete at the collegiate level is a true blessing."

At each school visit, the UVI student-athletes and coaching staff delivered words of encouragement and motivation to students, both in the classroom and on the court. Following these discussions, they engaged in basketball drills and other activities to interact with the students.

"This experience was truly special. I found it to be enjoyable, and the student-athletes expressed their appreciation as well," stated Men's Head Coach Kevin Sheppard. The event allowed the athletes to step away from the game for a moment, giving them a broader perspective on life beyond basketball. Witnessing the impact they had on the community firsthand was a powerful moment for them, serving as a source of motivation and inspiration."

The University of the Virgin Islands Athletics Department is committed to continuing school visits on the islands of St. Thomas and St. John in the coming months. We are dedicated to being an active and integral part of the Virgin Islands community.
