UVI’s Richardson and Patterson Selected to Attend NAIA Governance and Leadership Academy
ST. THOMAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS, March 25, 2025 –University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) Sports Information Director Shaquille Richardson and women's basketball graduate assistant Brea Patterson have been selected to attend the fourth annual National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Governance and Leadership Academy (GLA), which will be held in San Diego, California on April 3, 2025.
"I am excited and proud that Shaquille and Brea have been selected to represent UVI and the HBCU Athletic Conference at this year's Governance and Leadership Academy", said Director of Athletics Dr. Karen Carty. "It is the second consecutive year that UVI Athletics has had someone attend the GLA, which is even more exciting. Shaquille and Brea will learn things that will add invaluable skills to their growing skillset."
The NAIA Governance and Leadership Academy (GLA), held in conjunction with the NAIA National Convention, provides training to minority and female athletics administrators focused on NAIA governance, committee work, strategic initiatives, and leadership acumen. Of the 50 participants who will attend, Richardson and Patterson were two of the three individuals chosen to represent the Historically Black College and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC), marking UVI's third selection in the last two years following UVI's graduate assistant for administration, Taylor Nunley, in 2024.
Richardson has been with the University's athletics department since 2023, overseeing all communications from the department and providing comprehensive coverage of all Buccaneers athletic teams. During his tenure at UVI, Richardson has also taken on a leadership role in game-day operations and has spearheaded the development of programs aimed at enriching students' knowledge and providing practical experience in the field of college athletics.
"It's an honor," said Richardson. "I am truly excited about the opportunities to network and collaborate with individuals who share similar interests. The training and experience we will gain together will undoubtedly propel us forward on our respective career paths. I am confident that this experience will expand my knowledge across various fields, ultimately continuing to mold me into a well-rounded professional and knowledgeable leader in athletics administration."
Patterson, a former Lady Buccaneer basketball and cross-country student-athlete who competed during the 2023-2024 season, made her transition to coaching in 2024-2025 as she served as the women's basketball graduate assistant coach. Currently, Patterson is pursuing her Master of Business Administration (MBA) at UVI.
"Being selected for the NAIA Governance and Leadership Academy is an incredible honor," said Patterson. "I'm excited about the opportunity to learn from experienced mentors and collaborate with other driven individuals who share the same passion for leadership. I believe this event will provide me with the tools and connections to continue making a meaningful impact both personally and professionally."
