
Shaw-Clarke Scores Game-High 24 in Loss at Florida Memorial
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – UVI's Naythan Shaw-Clarke led all scorers with a game-high 24 points in a season-opening 103-71 loss at defending Sun Conference Champion Florida Memorial.
Shaw-Clarke connected on 8 of 15 from the floor while Jalil Langston added 20 points on 7 of 12 shooting. Eliyah Stevens finished with 10 points while Ali Palmer led the Bucs with eight rebounds.
UVI shot 44.1 percent from the field (26-59) and did not attempt a 3-pointer while Florida Memorial was 36 of 77 (46.8 percent) and made 17 of 44 from downtown (38.6 percent).
The Bucs scored the first five points of the second half to cut the deficit to 42-32 with 18:49 remaining in the game.
The Lions took control with a 10-2 run opening up a 52-34 lead with 16:06 left.
Florida Memorial jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the first four minutes. The Bucs would cut the deficit to 16-12 on a layup by Shaw-Clarke with 12:12 left in the opening half.
The Lions would use an 8-0 run increasing the lead to 24-12 with 9:12 left in the half.
UVI later answered with seven straight points as a Langston layup cut the deficit to 29-23 with five minutes left in the opening half before Florida Memorial responded with seven straight of its own for a 36-23 lead with 3:07 left and they took a 42-27 lead to the locker room.
The Buccaneers are back in action tomorrow night at St. Thomas with tip set for 5:30 to conclude the two game season-opening road trip.
