UVI Falls to Ft. Lauderdale in Skinner Classic

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – Fort Lauderdale University used a 20-1 run in the first half and a 19-0 run in the second half en route to a 103-68 win over the University of the Virgin Islands at the Scott Galvin Center as part of the Skinner Classic.

Fort Lauderdale improved to 17-12 on the season and beat the Bucs for the third time this season as the Eagles won 91-72 and 101-71 on January 23rd and 24th in North Miami.

Jalil Langston led UVI with 19 points, William Steger had a season-high 18 points and team-high five assists to lead the Bucs.

Naythan Shaw-Clarke registered his sixth consecutive double-double as he scored 13 points to go with a season-high 14 boards.

Joel Contreras was also in double figures as he finished with 16 points for UVI.

The Bucs were 25 of 52 (48.1 percent) from the field while making 6 of 16 from behind the arc. Fort Lauderdale shot 54.3 percent (44 of 81) while making 11 of 26 from 3-point range. 

Fort Lauderdale outrebounded the Bucs 45-27 and UVI turned it over 21 times while the Eagles had just nine turnovers.

The Bucs took an early 6-2 lead with 16:45 left before the host Eagles used the 20-1 run to take a 22-7 lead with 10:10 left in the first half 

UVI would respond with an 11-4 spurt cutting the deficit to 26-18 with 6:27 remaining in the half. The Bucs trailed 43-35 at the half.

UVI started the second half with a 9-3 run making the score 46-44 with 17:30 left.

The Eagles would score 19 straight to take control with a 83-59 lead with 8:31 remaining.

The Bucs, who dropped to 3-16, will close out the season on Friday at 4:00 EST against Florida National in the final day of the Skinner Classic.
