Bucs Win OT Thriller at SUNO

NEW ORLEANS, La. –
Naythan Shaw-Clarke had 24 points and a game-high six assists while Jalil Langston and Mario Dawson each had double-doubles leading the University of the Virgin Islands to its first win of the season a 68-66 overtime win at Southern University at New Orleans.

Langston had 15 points and 11 rebounds while Mario Dawson had season-highs with 14 points and a game-high 16 rebounds for the Bucs who are now 1-10 on the season. Dawson had 12 of his 14 points in the second half. 

UVI shot 36.4 percent (24-66) and were 0 for 10 from behind the arc while SUNO was 23 of 69 (33.3 percent) and connected on 8 of 32 from downtown (25 percent).

The Bucs jumped out to a 7-0 lead. SUNO would score nine straight later to take its first lead of the game 18-15 with 8:57 left in the first half. SUNO led 30-25 at halftime.

SUNO (2-8) would score seven straight to open the second half and take a 37-25 lead in the opening two minutes.

Shaw-Clarke made a pair of free throws with 7:43 left to cap a UVI 8-0 run as the Bucs regained the lead 47-46.

The Bucs pushed the lead to 56-50 with 1:53 left and led 58-55 following a pair of free throws by Shirmoy O'Garro with six seconds left before Isaiah Sanders hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.

Shaw-Clarke was 4 for 4 from the foul line in the final 37 seconds as the Bucs took a 67-63 lead. SUNO had two chances to hit a trey to tie the game in the final six seconds, but the Bucs held on.

UVI is back in action on Monday night at Spring Hill with tip set for 9:30 local time.
