Shaw-Clarke Double-Double Not Enough as Bucs Fall On the Road

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Naythan Shaw-Clarke registered his first double-double of the season as he led all scorers with a game-high 26 points to go with his season-high 10 rebounds but Fort Lauderdale beat the University of the Virgin Islands 91-72.

Fort Lauderdale evens its record at 12-12 with the win while UVI drops to 1-13 on the season. The teams will meet again on Tuesday night at 7.00 p.m EST.

Jalil Langston added 19 points and seven rebounds while Joel Contreras was also in double figures for the Bucs with 14 points.

William Steger had a game-high eight assists and four steals to go with five points in his UVI debut while Nate Carroll finished with a season-high eight points. 

UVI was 25 of 58 from the floor (43.1 percent) while making 3 of 14 from 3-point range. Fort Lauderale shot 50.6 percent (42 of 83) and connected on 4 of 20 from behind the arc.

The Eagles dominated the boards as they doubled UVI out rebounding the Bucs 54-27 including 23 offensive rebounds.

UVI jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead as Steger scored the first bucket of the game to get things started.

Fort Lauderdale would answer with a 13-2 run to take a 13-8 lead with 16:17 left in the opening half. The Eagles would later score eight straight to open up a 21-12 advantage with 11:36 left in the first half.

Carroll knocked down a 3-pointer to make the score 31-22 with 6:24 left, but the Bucs would score just one field goal the rest of the first half as Fort Lauderdale outscored the Bucs 17-9 over that stretch for a 48-31 lead at the break. Contreras had six of the UVI points during the run going 6-for-6 from the foul line.

Shaw-Clarke led the Bucs with 10 points in the first half while Langston added nine. Steger had five assists and four steals in the opening half.

In the second half, Fort Lauderdale took its largest lead of the game, 52-33 before the Bucs used a 13-4 run capped on a layup by Carroll to cut the deficit to 56-46 with 14:28 remaining.

The Eagles would use an 8-2 run later taking a 71-55 lead with 8:10 left to put the game away.
